The First Month of Pregnancy

Exactly one month has passed since The Annunciation. Within Catholicism, life begins at the moment of conception; therefore, the instant the Virgin Mary said "Yes" to the Archangel Gabriel, God's messenger, she was accepting the Lord's will. God physically began to dwell within the Virgin's womb; she was already carrying the Baby Jesus in her womb, and He had begun to develop as a human. This is the Mystery of the Incarnation (Spanish version)It's helpful to keep in mind the Hypostatic Union (Spanish version): Jesus possesses two natures—the divine nature and the human nature—united in one single person, being simultaneously fully God and fully man.
5 Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus,
6 Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.
a Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,
He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.

This first month of pregnancy was a time of tested faith with the Virgin Mary, and it was surely marked by a heroic silence. This was not a silence of concealment or fear, but one of sacred custody.

  The First Tabernacle

The Virgin Mary became the first tabernacle guarding the Body of Christ. According to the laws and customs of that time, while the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph were fulfilling the period of Kiddushin (betrothal)—"קידושין" transliterated as "Kiddushin", which is a "Masechet" ("מסכת", a tractate) regarding the formalities of courtship and marriage—they had to wait. Although Mary and Joseph had signed the marriage commitment six months prior and could be called husband and wife, they had to complete one year before they could begin living together. This period allowed the husband to prepare the home where he would live with his wife.

Furthermore, the law was very strict regarding children born out of wedlock. According to the Law of Moses, infidelity during the betrothal period could be punished by death by stoning. The Virgin Mary remained silent not out of fear, but because of her absolute trust in God. She did not need "explanations" before men; she let God take care of the truth.

  Reflection and Faith

In this first month, we meditate on the Mystery of the Incarnation and accompany Virgin Mary in her initial silence. We contemplate the humility of God who becomes small and almost imperceptible while growing in the womb of His mother. The Virgin Mary is now the Ark of the Covenant, guarding the Baby Jesus—the real presence of the Son of God—while her body adapts to the great mission entrusted by the Lord.

The faith and courage shown by the young Virgin Mary is not just a biological process; it is absolute trust in God. In these first weeks of pregnancy, while continuing her daily tasks, Mary had the certainty that the person forming within her was the Savior. She was already teaching us how to carry Christ during our daily chores.

"The Virgin Mary, in her first month of pregnancy with the Baby Jesus beginning to grow in her womb, teaches us that God's plans sometimes place us in situations difficult to explain to others. It is not necessary to despair by giving explanations to the world; it is enough to let God act in His time and to guard His presence in our hearts."
